It is often easy to donate car that is less useful than to try selling it. You might not like the idea at one point but think of it as a tax benefit and you should be willing to take the step ahead. Now that you like the idea wait for a while before you jump head first to donate your car as, you need to ensure that you are donating in a way that entitles you to the benefits. Tax rules change almost each financial year; first educate yourself on the latest tax policies with reference to vehicle donation.
Previously you were able to show the fair market value of the donated car for tax deduction, but that thing is no more possible due to the latest tax reforms. As per the latest reform you can show the value of the car as more than $500 even if your car’s actual market value is $2000. However if you want to show it as more than $500 then you need the charity to claim that amount. This of course will be a cumbersome process. To avoid such a thing it is always advisable to donate car to a charity which will use it for their day to day work and not the one that will auction it out.
